St Mary’s achieves Bronze for the Food4Life Schools Award

The Tameside and Glossop Children’s Nutrition Team have been in school recently to assess our food and nutrition provision and complete an initial assessment.  Their report found the following good practices:

  • The school has a Nutrition Champion
  • Healthy Eating is actively promoted as part of our Curriculum provision
  • Fruit is available to KS1 at morning break and is the only snack permitted to be brought from home by KS2 pupils
  • Drinking water is freely available throughout the school day.
  • The school lunchtime menus meet the school food standards
  • Year 5 have completed the Healthy Lifestyle programme and families have attended the Ready, Steady, Cook & Eat programme.
  • No edible birthday treats are permitted in school
  • The School Council regularly discuss healthy eating and the move towards personalised menus was a result of their work.

The report also made the following suggestions for the school to work on to further improve their provision

  • Staff training
  • Promotion and monitoring of Healthy Lunchboxes
  • School menus to show all items offered to pupils (carbohydrate, vegetable and dessert options) and school menus to be displayed around school and on the school website.
  • Portion size to be age appropriate and school to adopt a policy of no longer offering seconds.

The School Council are also looking into the promotion of Healthy Lunchboxes and a meeting has been arranged to enable them to share their views with a member of the Children’s Nutrition Team.  We await the outcome with interest!
