Y3

Y3 Assembly

This week, Year 3 led our liturgical prayer. Their focus was on the importance of having faith and as part of this the children acted out the story of Doubting Thomas. They did an amazing job of learning their lines and acting on the day, which made it very special. We ended by singing along to our hymn – Sing Out an Easter Song, the words of which echoed our learning around faith.

French breakfast morning

Year 3 and 5 enjoyed a French breakfast this morning. Year 5 acted as the waiters and Year 3 as the customers. They asked each other what they would like in French and then enjoyed a selection of delicious French breakfast foods including croissants, crepes, pain au chocolat and brioche.

Y5 & Y3 ‘Wolves in the wall’

The children in Year 5 have been writing nightmare stories over the last few weeks based around the book ‘Wolves in the Wall’. Once they had finished their stories, they read them to the Year 3’s. The Year 5’s really enjoyed having an audience to read their stories to and the Year 3’s all agreed that the stories were scarily spooky.

Y3 Design & Technology – Sandwich snacks.

In Design Technology, Year 3 have been looking at designing and creating their very own ‘sandwich snacks’. After doing some taste testing last week, the children were ready to start designing. We chose to do this by creating a ‘exploded diagram’, which helped us to clearly show all the ingredients and fillings that will be used in our sandwiches. Then, the children wrote a simple set of instructions to ensure they are ready for bringing their creations to life next week!

Y3 Weather and Climate

In Geography, Year 3 have been learning all about weather and climate.  Over the past few weeks, we have been spending a few minutes each day recording the weather in our daily weather diaries, to see if we could spot any patterns or changes. This week, we found out more about why the weather is like it is. The children learnt about how the world is divided up by the equator, the tropics and the poles and what this means for our global weather system. They also had their first so far in Year 3 at using atlases, in which they had to locate different countries around the world and think about what the weather might be like there, using their learning and the knowledge that they have gained in this topic so far.

Y3 Science – Fun with magnets

This week in Science, Year 3 have been investigating the strengths of different types of magnets. We tested metal bar magnets, plastic bar magnets, small horseshoe magnets and large horse shoe magnets. We investigated how many paper clips each magnet could hold.

Class Dojo – Years 2,3 and 4

This week Class Dojo has been rolled out to parents and children in years 2, 3 and 4. Year 5 have been trialing the app for the past week and it has proved extremely successful. It is an excellent tool for communicating between school and home. Teachers are able to answer questions and queries relating to home learning and children can also upload their work to their own portfolio so teachers can have a look and provide feedback.

All parents in years 2,3,4 and 5 should have now received an invitation to join Class Dojo and have also received a QR code so the children are able to set up their personal portfolios. Follow the instructions, download the app and you are ready to go. If you haven’t received your invitation or QR code please contact the school office.

Year 3 Hard at work…

Year 3 continue to lead the way with their exceptionally hard work. Raymond has been working hard learning about the parts of a plant and keeping up with his RE work; at home Connor has been concentrating really hard and produced some brilliant work;  whilst Fern has written a wonderful poem about walking in the PE district; Logan and his brother Hadley made decorations to celebrate VE day, which looked wonderful and Noah has been learning about British inventions, heiroglyphics and keeping up with his reading. Well done to all of you.

Wonderful reading and maths

Our Year 3 pupils continue to be busy, which Mrs Farrell is most impressed with. James has continued to work very hard at home and has especially been enjoying reading the The Midnight Gang by David Walliams and has completed lots of maths work including work on fractions and using part-whole models. Brilliant work and keep it up.

Heiroglyphics and Garden Grow

More fantastic work from year 3 who have been investigating and drawing how your garden grows and writing in heiroglyphics and drawing maps of Egypt. Mrs Farrell is so impressed with your brilliant work and enthusiasm. Keep it up.

Plants, seeds and St. George

More brilliant examples of home-learning from the children of St. Mary’s who are getting thoroughly involved with the work set on the school website. From planting and observing seeds, looking at the differences between leaves and also finding out about our patron saint to celebrate St. George’s day. Fantastic work by all of you. Keep it up and keep the pictures coming in.

Home Learning

Home learning for all year groups is now available on the class pages. Some of the work may need downloaded to look at but the majority should be able to be completed within the children’s home learning books.

For maths there are also links to both the Power Maths scheme of work which we follow in school and has been adapted for use at home and also the White Rose Hub which is very similar, easy to use and navigate.

Please continue to use Times Tables Rockstars (we can see who has been using it regularly) and reading on a daily basis.

Finally, don’t forget to keep fit and active with PE with Joe Wicks each morning.

Science – Light and Shadows

Year 3 have been learning about Light and Shadows this half term and have really enjoyed experimenting with  different light sources, reflections and shadows. Last week the children created shadow puppet shows to explain all they have learnt in this topic and had fantastic subject knowledge.

KS2 House Book Quiz

Our 4 houses at St. Mary’s battled it out to become the Book Quiz champions yesterday afternoon. It was excellent to see the pupils’ fantastic knowledge of books, characters, titles and authors so a big well done to everyone who took part. The competition was very close and in the end, all came down to a tie-breaker question between 2 of the teams. With their brilliant book knowledge and great teamwork skills, Arrowsmith pipped Ward at the post and became this year’s winners. Congratulations Arrowsmith!

Year 3 are learning about rocks, soils and fossils

This term Year 3 are learning about rocks, soils and fossils. This week we have started to explore different characteristics of rocks by looking closely at ‘Sweetie Rocks’. The children were all given a range of different sweets and had to classify the sweets into groups according to different criteria. The class really enjoyed the activity and used fantastic vocabulary to describe each ‘Sweetie Rock’.

Year 3 Collective Worship

In their Collective Worship, year 3 told the story of the Resurrection and how Jesus appeared to some of  his friends on the road to Emmaus.  They also told how Thomas would not believe that Jesus had risen from the dead until he had touch the wounds that the nails had made.   The children’s singing and acting was excellent and the parents thoroughly enjoyed their collective worship.
