Year 5 STEM project at St Thomas More

Class 5H are taking part in the Science, Technology and Maths (STEM) project at St. Thomas More. The aim of the project is to develop the children’s problem solving and collaborative work skills.  The project involves a series of lessons centred around design and build tasks.  Their most recent visit involved planning and designing a Formula1 car and race track.  The children are certainly enjoying the project and they have developed a ‘can do’ attitude to problem solving and collaborative working which is great to see.

Our Y5 pupils have been excellent ambassadors for St. Mary’s recently.  Congratulations to all our Y5 children for all the positive feedback which keeps flooding into school.

Year 5 – Junior Sports Leader Award Day at St Thomas More

Class 5H visited St. Thomas More to take part in their annual Junior Sports Leader Award (JSLA) Day.  They played a variety of sports with pupils from St John Fisher and St Anne’s and took part in a mini Olympics in the afternoon. The coaches said that the children showed ‘great spirit and teamwork skills’.  The children will return to St Thomas More in the summer term to complete the award.  This will also involve helping our Y2 children develop their skills in PE and Sport.

Year 5 – Guitar Tuition and Showcase Event

All the children in Year 5 are currently learning to play the guitar and have a weekly lesson with Mr Horner (Tameside Music Service).  The children have been loaned a guitar for the year and are encouraged to practise regularly at home.  On Monday, the children performed a number of songs in front of the whole school and their parents.  The children have made excellent progress in a short space of time and are rightly proud of their achievements.  This enrichment provision is subsidised by school and we hope that children will be encouraged to continue to learn a musical instrument when they are in Year 6 and / or at high school.

All our KS2 children have the opportunity to play an instrument in a small group (ensemble) with specialist tuition from Tameside Music Service.  Information packs are available from the School Office

Year Five Play with the Halle Orchestra!

On Thursday 11th July year five were given the opportunity to showcase their amazing guitar skills at the Bridgewater Hall alongside the world famous Halle Orchestra. Having completed 22 weeks of intensive tuition, the children wowed an audience of over three hundred people with four pieces they learned with Tameside Music Service’s Robin Horner. The children certainly did the school proud and enjoyed responding to the Halle Orchestra in an extremely professional manner.

Year Five Healthy Living Project

This week year five have been busy learning all about the content in a range of foods. They discovered that even though some food is advertised as being healthy, it often contains high levels of fat and salt!

The year five children also completed the bleep test, where some reached distances of 3500metres!

Year 5 Build a Formula 1 Car!

Some of Y5 children went to St Thomas More College to take part in a STEM project event.  The STEM project is co-ordinated by St Thomas More as part of their specialism in Science, Technology and Maths.  The project involved the children designing and building a Formula 1 car (fortunately for the streets of  Denton – not life size) and taking part in a Grand Prix.  The children were most disappointed not to win the Grand Prix but had a great time and gained from working alongside children from other schools.

‘Personal Safety’ Awareness Raising Workshops

At St. Mary’s we are constantly trying to develop the children’s understanding of the importance of their own personal safety. ChildLine have visited school and introduced the Year 5 and 6 children to their new ‘Be Safe, Be Happy’ initiative which has a strong anti bullying / personal safety theme.

The children were complimented on their mature response to the themes covered by Mrs Tabner and their high level of engagement.
