Advent in F2
In F2 we are preparing for Christmas with our new ‘Advent and Christmas’ theme. We have a special class advent calendar of hanging stars, each with a little deed for us to do for that day: it could be saying a prayer for our family or sharing our toys. We are reading the stories about the first Christmas from our class Bible and acting them out in a variety of ways.
We have a travelling crib which is coming home with a child each night. Inside is a stable scene, candle and a book of reflection for you to share as a family within your homes. We hope that you enjoy using them together.

Autumn!
We have been very busy in F1 over the last few weeks learning all about Autumn!
We begun by reading the story of ‘The Little Red Hen.’ The children loved receiving some freshly baked bread from the hen and her special recipe. We made our own craft little red hens and loved retelling the story using our class story map and puppets. We have also been practicing our mark-making skills by tracing patterns/circles and lines and children have shown great development in their independent name writing.
Recently we have enjoyed reading the story ‘That’s not my hedgehog’ and the children have been busy feeling different textures and describing them. We have made hedgehogs using play dough and have loved lots of craft activities making Autumn leaf collages and our own hedgehogs too.
We learnt about a special festival called Diwali and even made our own Diva lamps to take home. We also loved taking part in lots of fun activities last week for Children in need.
In maths we have been continuing to learn lots of fun numbers rhymes and songs. The children have been using Numicon to carefully count objects to 10, we have learnt the names of some 2D shapes and created shape rockets. Children have enjoyed learning some position vocabulary and also learning to use scales to see which items are heavier/lighter. We have loved using real Autumn objects for our counting games too!
In phonics we have been continuing to work on our listening and attention skills with games like sound lotto and we have also been thinking about how we can make different sounds using our bodies too. The children have been able to discriminate between different sounds and especially love to play ‘Noisy Neighbour.’
In our Outdoor learning we have been busy making Autumn soup in the mud kitchen as well as lots of role-play in our new fruit & veg shop. We have been on a shape hunt looking for real-life 2D shapes outside and have played lots of fun phonics games too such as Follow the leader and Grandma’s footsteps.
We are very proud of all of the children and their achievements so far in Nursery, keep up the good work everybody!

Autumn
We have had lots of fun in EYFS exploring the current season in our Autumn theme. Here in F2 we started with an Owl Babies focus. Baby Owl Bill actually flew into our classroom to answer our questions! We made junk modelling owls and acted out the story using story spoons. We worked together to use our phonics to write a list of ideas for exciting new foods for Bill to try, as he was so fed up with mice! We are now reading the story of the Enormous Turnip. We loved acting out the story and will soon be retelling the story using a story map. We have also been finding out facts about Autumn and making our own Autumn books.
In maths we have been doing lots of counting using autumn objects such as conkers and pine cones. We have been using conkers to do some simple addition by combining two groups to see how many we have altogether. We have also been doing lots of number recognition games, such as ‘I draw a number on your back’.
In our creative area we have loved exploring different Autumn colours, through paints and colour mixing. We have been looking carefully at the world around us, then making pictures and collages of autumn trees. We have been cutting leaves and leaf shapes to develop our scissor skills. In our playdough area we have exploring making different patterns using a variety of autumn artefacts. We have also used a range of materials to make our own hedgehogs.
Our children went on autumn walks and collected a range of Autumn artefacts for our discovery table. We have been examining and describing them. We are now using them to create our own ‘transient’ works of art, just like Andy Goldsworthy!
We have been busy in our outdoor learning environment too. We have been making lots of fabulous recipes and Autumn soups in our mud kitchen. We are currently having lots of fun in our fruit and vegetable stall roleplay area, acting out the different roles and taking turns. A busy, happy class!
Healthy Teeth – Our Special Visitor
We have had a special visitor in EYFS to teach us about keeping our teeth healthy. She brought along her special friend Charlie the Crocodile too! We talked about using a small brush and a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Using Charlie we looked at making sure that we brush all of our teeth with the help of an adult. We learned that we should spit out any extra toothpaste and avoid rinsing out our mouth. We also talked about the importance of visiting the dentist regularly. You may like to talk about these things with your child at tooth brushing time.
Charlie will be staying with us in school for a while and we will be practising brushing his teeth. The children have also all received a toothbrush and toothpaste to help them keep their teeth strong and healthy at home.
Champions! Champions!
Champions, champions!!! The girls football team put in a great performance last week at the Tameside girls tournament, winning the tournament and seeing off five other teams to claim victory. All the girls were fantastic, showing a great attitude and lots of skill and agility. They were a credit to St Mary’s.

Year 2 Collective Worship – Being Chosen and Trusting in God
Year 2 lead the school in an excellent collective worship on Thursday telling everyone about how God has chosen people to do special jobs and how we must then trust in God. They told us about some very important people from the Old Testament; Moses and Abraham before acting out the story of Daniel who was saved by an Angel after being thrown in the lion’s den. They then told us about people they trust and how they felt when they were chosen for special jobs or responsibilities. Finally they gave us an excellent rendition of their song ‘You Can Trust in God’. Well done Year 2.
Year 2 Explorer Workshop
Year 2 had a fantastic time learning about Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong on Tuesday morning through their time travelling guide. The children thoroughly enjoyed acting out the port of Genoa. sleeping on the sheep and meeting the natives of the new world. They were then able to apply this to what they know about Neil Armstrong and how the two explorers were very similar despite being many years apart. In class we have also been able to link this to our learning about Captain Cook. Following the session the children were all made honorary time-travelers.

F1 – Settling In
What a fantastic start to the year we have had in F1! The children have settled into school life so well and have already begun to make great progress in their areas of learning. All of the children are able to select their own resources and are already very independent learners!
Our Topic this half term has been ‘All about me’ and the children have really enjoyed talking about their families, their likes and dislikes and also about what makes them special. We have drawn self portraits and also had lots of fun playing Guess Who with our own baby photographs.
We have read lots of stories to encourage the children to join in with repeated phrases and also loved reading about Elmer the Elephant who is a very special patchwork elephant. We have learnt about how God created our wonderful world and painted pictures of all the things God created.
In maths we have learnt many new number rhymes and songs and have loved joining in with the words and actions. We have been busy learning the names of shapes and also counting objects.
In our Outdoor learning we have loved playing builders, singing on our stage and learning to ride the bikes and scooters. Children have enjoyed baking in our mud kitchen and also creating their own ramps for cars and obstacle courses.
We love Snack Time in Nursery, we sit and socialise with our friends during snack and we have loved trying different fruits and especially love Toasty Friday!
Thank you for all of your support this 1st half term, we hope you found the EYFS Curriculum meeting useful and hope that you are enjoying looking through your child’s observations on Tapestry- please feel free to add your own observations/photographs, it is really lovely to see the children’s development at home as well as at school.
Year 1 – Special Visitors!
On Monday, Year 1 had some special visitors in class. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about and handling animals from around the world. They particularly liked holding the Royal Python but weren’t quite as keen on stroking Spinderella the spider!
F2 – All About Me
The children in F2 have made a great start to the school year. We have been settling into our classroom rules and routines. We have started the year with an ‘All About Me’ topic. We have been talking about ourselves, our families, our likes and dislikes. We have looked carefully at ourselves in mirrors and talked about similarities and differences. We have made self portraits and pictures of our friends using paints, oil pastels and collage materials- we are learning to make decisions about what materials to choose and to be more independent.
In literacy we have been reading the story of Elmer and reflecting on how, just like Elmer, we are all different and special. We have made special houses for Elmer in our construction area and in the crates outdoors. We have acted out the story, retold the story using a story map and made our very own characters for the story. We have been making labels for our characters by listening to the first sounds in words and recording them.
In maths we have done lots of work on number recognition, ordering numbers and counting groups of objects by lining them up and pointing at each one as we count.
Over on our discovery table we are thinking all about our five senses. We have been used torches, colour paddles, kaleidoscopes and viewers to think about sight and we are currently thinking about the sense of touch by describing objects in feely tubs. We will soon be going on a listening walk around our school… and we are also looking forward to exploring our sense of taste!
Thank you to all those who attended our EYFS Curriculum Workshop, which focused on the objectives covered this year and how you can support your child at home. Please have a go at using the Tapestry tool to share your home observations with us here at school, this insight is so valuable.
Tag Rugby
St. Mary’s took two teams to the Tag Rugby qualifying event least Wednesday. Both teams played exceptionally well and tried their best throughout. One of the teams has qualified for the finals which will be held this coming Wednesday after winning all of their matches. Well done to both teams and thanks to Mrs Evans and Mrs Cheung.
Football
St. Mary’s played their first football match of the season last Friday but unfortunately didn’t get the result they probably deserved. Despite taking a 3-1 lead against St. Anne’s with goals through Cody and Ryan (2) they eventually lost 3-6 after a flurry of late goals. All members of their team played exceptionally well and hopefully next time will get the result they deserve.

EYFS Sports Day
EYFS Sports Day
The EYFS children had a fantastic sports day last week. The children each competed in 4 races: the sprint, beanbag balance, the egg and spoon race and the pick up race. They all tried really hard and made us very proud.
Thank you to all the parents who came to support the children
Magical Matilda
Well done to Year 6 who have completed their performances of Matilda this past Tuesday and Thursday nights. On both occasions the children sang, danced and acted their hearts out in front of packed audiences who were thoroughly entertained. Brilliantly supported by the Year 5 choir the packed house was left speechless by the amazing professionalism and performances of the children and all involved. Congratulations to Year 6, you were amazing.
All Creatures Great and Small
In EYFS we have followed the children’s interests in this last half term and created a topic called ‘All Creatures Great and Small”. For the first part of the half term we have focused on minibeasts. Our very own caterpillars arrived in the classroom and we watched them grow into beautiful butterflies. In F2 we read ‘Mad About Minibeasts’. We had fun moving around like different minibeasts, describing them and writing our own minibeast riddles. We have made junk modelling minibeasts and minibeast houses. We have had lots of fun searching for minibeasts both at school and at home, thank you for joining in and sharing your minibeasts on Tapestry. In maths we have been solving minibeast number problems and using creatures to help us to find our number bonds to 10.
We have now moved on to learning all about dinosaurs. A mysterious egg arrived in our classroom and we have been guessing what may be inside. Our text is ‘Dinosaurs in my School’ – we will be thinking about the different kinds of mischief that dinosaurs might get up to if they visited our school! We have been making dinosaur caves in the crates outside and painting fantastic dinosaur pictures. In our role play area we have our very own explorers’ jeep for dinosaur hunting! We are keeping our eyes open for strange happenings…
The Three Little Pigs
We followed the children’s interests and have focused on the story of the Three Little Pigs for the second half of our Traditional Tales topic. We have had fun learning and acting out the story in a variety of ways. We made a story map together of the story, then changed parts to make our own tale: The Three Little Jellyfish. Luckily they managed to escape from the Big Bad Shark! This topic has generated some fantastic writing, both in school and at home. Other highlights have been our outdoor construction site, where our builders have been hard at work making houses for the pigs, as well as some fantastic houses made in our junk modelling area. Our children have also made some very creative puppets of the characters, deciding themselves what type of puppet that they would make and how they would do it. In maths we have focused on heavier and lighter and have been weighing different materials using our scales, making predictions first. We are also counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and beginning to use this skill to solve simple number problems, like counting groups of sticks. We have also been measuring the pigs’ sticks using cubes and rulers.
In our discovery area we have followed on our work about plants and growing by thinking about healthy food. We have looked carefully at a variety of fruits and vegetables and discussed healthy choices. We are currently designing healthy meals and shopping lists for the three little pigs.
Stations of Mary
May is the month of special devotion of Our Lady. The GIFT Team led a reflection of the Stations of Mary for each class in St Mary’s Church this week. Each station was accompanied by a beautiful image of Mary created by each class in school. The prayer service was an opportunity for the children, parents and parishioners to reflect on special moments in the life of Mary. The children responded with prayerful reverence.

Year 2 Trip to Victoria Park
Year 2 spent a glorious science lesson in Victoria Park on Monday 14th! The lesson was all about observing plants and the differences between them. They made tree bark rubbings to compare the texture of trees, accurate drawings of the flowering plants and learnt how dandelions disperse their seeds. The children behaved beautifully and were a credit to the school! Many thanks to the parent helpers who made the trip possible.
Year 4 Collective Worship
Year 4 retold the story of the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and the beginning of the Early Church. They reminded us of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, particularly courage and led a reflection on times when they might ask the Holy Spirit for courage too
Year 3 Collective Worship
In their Collective Worship, year 3 told the story of the Resurrection and how Jesus appeared to some of his friends on the road to Emmaus. They also told how Thomas would not believe that Jesus had risen from the dead until he had touch the wounds that the nails had made. The children’s singing and acting was excellent and the parents thoroughly enjoyed their collective worship.
PTA Minutes
Spring has Sprung!
We are thinking all about Spring and growing here in EYFS. We have been looking carefully at different plants as well as seeds, bulbs and roots. We are doing lots of planting, both indoors and out. We followed a set of instructions to grow cress seeds and we have filled our garden area with beautiful flowers. In literacy we are continuing our growing theme by reading Jack and the Beanstalk. We have been retelling the story in a variety of different ways. We have even had a special visit from Jack himself in our classroom! We are going to be retelling the story using a story map and then writing our own version of the story with a twist. In maths we are continuing to practise our addition: we have been adding together the prices of flowers in our flower shop role play area. We have also been halving objects by sharing them equally in two groups. We have divided up different sets of magic beans between two people. We have also used our halving skill to help us to halve up the snap cards to play the game. We have loved building castles for the giant in the construction are, the junk modelling area and in the crates area.
Visit to the Sea Life Centre
This week the children in F1 and F2 visited the Sealife Centre. We were very excited as we got ready to leave school. When we arrived we moved through the different exhibits looking at the sea creatures and learning lots of interesting facts about them. We saw jelly fish, clown fish, sting rays, puffer fish and many more. We also spent a long time in the Ocean Tunnel watching the sharks and turtles swimming over our heads! A big thank you to all the parent helpers who helped to make the trip possible, we had a brilliant morning.
Year 2 Animal Workshop
On Monday afternoon, 2G had some very unusual visitors! Andy from Animals InTuition was kind enough to show us his amazing animals and tell us about their young and their natural habitats. We all enjoyed handling Gromit the Sandfish, Elsa the Leopard Gecko, Thomas the Vietnamese Tree Frog, Mr Tickles the Royal Boa Python, Jerry the Guinea Pig and Esio Trot the Red Footed Tortoise. We learnt lots about the animals, and some of us were very surprised to find out that Mr Tickles was very smooth to the touch and not slimy at all! 2G did the school proud with their perfect behaviour, inquisitive questions and gentle manner with the VIPs.
March Mud Mayhem
The children thoroughly enjoyed their wet and muddy ‘muddy mayhem’ assault course this week. Proceeds from the event will be shared between Sports Relief and PTA Funds. Thank you for your support.
Year 4 Trip to Bramall Hall
Year 4 went back in time to Tudor Britain when they visited Bramall Hall. The children wore traditional Tudor clothes, they enjoyed playing Tudor games, Tudor dancing and making Tudor nosegays.
F2 – Under the Sea
The children in EYFS are really enjoying our Under the Sea topic. In F2 we have been reading Commotion in the Ocean. We have been looking at the different describing words, moving like the sea creatures and making the sea creature noises with our musical instruments. We have been writing our own riddles for under the sea creatures: using our phonics and tricky words to write a set of clues so that our friends can guess the sea creature. We have also been making our own Under the Sea books in the writing area. In maths we have been adding and subtracting in many different ways: using bead strings, objects and by drawing pictures to help us. We are also halving groups of objects: we are dividing up groups of shells between two mermaids.
We have mermaids and mermen in our role play area too. We have used our own artwork to create an underwater world and made ourselves tails from shimmering fabric. We have engaged in underwater small world play both indoors and out, and enjoyed making submarines with the crates. In the discovery area we are looking closely at shells, describing them and making observational drawings. There has been some amazing creativity coming from our creative area as the children have imagined what creatures could be living down in the deep, dark sea.
World Book Day
To celebrate World Book Day, the children had a special day in which they interpreted stories through dance. The stories being Where The Wild Things Are and Alice in Wonderland. The children dressed up in a variety of colourful and wonderful outfits associated with characters from the story. They then the opportunity to interpret their particular story through dance with the guidance of a professional dancer. The children had a fantastic time and the results of their dancing were outstanding.
Preparing for Easter – Our Lent Tree
In EYFS we have been learning about how Lent is a very special time when we prepare for Easter. In our RE lessons we have been reading Bible stories about how kind Jesus was to everybody. Jesus loves everyone and we are trying to be more like him. We have thought about what we can do to be more like Jesus during Lent. We all thought of a kind deed and hung it from our Lent tree. What kind deed could you do at home today?
Talking Together – The Brilliance of Books
Here at St Mary’s we promote Tameside’s Talking Together initiative, which is designed to encourage speaking and listening skills amongst young people. Talking effectively is so important for children to be successful readers, writers and in other areas of learning. In school we create lots of opportunity for talk within our lessons and our daily routines. Please visit Talking Together Tameside and Glossop for more information.
This month’s theme is the brilliance of books. Reading helps to develop children’s listening and attention skills, their understanding and their spoken language. This month’s challenge is to share a variety of books with your child at home: you can share home favourites, share our school library books and even take a trip to Denton Library. Please share what you have read with us at school using Tapestry or your school reading record. In school, we will be sharing and re-enacting lots of ‘Under the Sea’ books to match our theme. Can you find any under the sea books to share?
Year 5 Trip to Bronte Parsonage Museum
Year 5 had a fantastic day at the Bronte Parsonage Museum, Haworth. In literacy we have been studying the classic text Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte the visit to the museum involved a Jane Eyre workshop. The coach journey to Haworth involved a very windy road across the moors then onto the picturesque village. We arrived at the parsonage and our first mission was to head up Penistone Hill on to the moorland above Haworth. It was gloves and hats on then a good hike to blow away the cobwebs. Looking at the moorland it gave us a good idea of how Jane became stranded once she left Thornfield Hall and headed onto the moors.
We then headed back down to the museum and tucked into our packed lunches, after lunch we there was a Jane Eyre workshop, focusing on a scene from Jane’s time at Lowood School. The children thoroughly enjoyed taking the different roles in the scene and really got into character.
After a tour round the parsonage museum looking at lots of interesting information about the life of the Brontes we were ready to head back to St Mary’s. The children were great representatives of St Marys and their behaviour was exemplary. A good day had by all and a nice way to end our literacy topic.
F1 – Winter
Since Christmas we have been learning about winter. We have explored how our environment changes and compared this to the changes we see in autumn. We also discussed how the weather changes in winter and thought about the clothes we need to wear to keep warm. Although we didn’t get enough snow to build a snowman, we made lots of snow castles and explored the ice on the ground. We also collected the hailstones and observed what happened to them throughout the morning.
We made winter pictures in the creative area and had a go at painting with the ice cubes. We also made igloos using sugar cubes and created our own snowflakes in the funky finger area. In our role play area we created Elsa’s castle and spent lots of time creating our own Frozen stories. In maths we spent time counting and sorting snowflakes. We also made our own shape snowflakes. In literacy we explored the story ‘Guess How Much I Love You in Winter.’ We spent time orally retelling the story and created a story map. We then innovated the story to create our own section. In our writing sessions we then drew this section and wrote our own sentence.
Chinese New Year
We have started this half term in EYFS by learning about and celebrating Chinese New Year. We have talked about our own experiences of the Chinese New Year in Manchester, plus learnt about Chinese traditions and customs. We have compared this to the ways in which we traditionally celebrate New Year. We have been making dragon masks and Chinese lanterns. We have looked at Chinese writing and written Chinese New Year cards. We had an exciting food tasting session too, our class are very fond of sweet and sour sauce with rice! We have had a go at using chopsticks to pick up small objects (a great fine motor activity!). In PE our class did some dragon dancing – we took turns playing the drum and moving faster and slower with the beat.
