RAF Cosford – Year 6

27th February 2018

As part of their topic on WW2 and the Battle of Britain, Year 6 enjoyed a fun day at the RAF museum, Cosford. At the start of the day, the children attended a school, which was set up as if from the era and learnt all about the planes and people involved in the Battle of Britain. They had the opportunity to handle real life artifacts from the War, including an incendiary bomb (which Allie was allowed to hold!) and a chamber pot, which Jemima thought would be great for drinking coffee from.

Following that, the children explored different areas of the museum and were able to look at a number of different planes and vehicles.

Following lunch, we headed to the ‘fun and flight’ exhibition and had a go at a number of science experiments which explain how flight works. In this same area, the children (and adults) were able to have a go on the flight simulator which was an especially bumpy ride. In the war in the air exhibition, we saw a number of the planes we learnt about in the morning, including: the spitfire, Messerschmidt, Junkers 88 and hurricane.

Overall, a fantastic day and the children learnt an awful lot. Their behaviour and enthusiasm was excellent throughout.

Safer Internet Day in EYFS

8th February 2018

Our school has been refreshing the message of how to be safe when using the internet this week.  In EYFS we know that many children enjoy playing on tablets and using games online.  We looked at what to do if there is an unusual pop-up on their device, or if they find themselves on a website that they don’t know, reinforcing that they should always ask an adult for help.  Our children enjoyed saying our rhyme: “Before you tap and click, you need to stop and think … and tell someone!”

Our Winter Topic

5th February 2018

We have loved learning all about winter during this half term.  We have read non-fiction books about winter, looked at how to use a contents page and made our own winter book.  Now we are focusing on the story of Stick Man.  We have retold the story through play and by following a story map and this week we are going to add a new page to the adventure.  We have had lots of different writing opportunities, including writing Stick Man speech bubbles and making Lost posters to help the Stick Lady Love to find him.  We have also enjoyed sharing our favourite Julia Donaldson books from home and telling the class all about them.

In maths, we have been counting backwards from 20. Try practising this at home, can you count backwards without skipping out any numbers?  We have also been finding the number one more and fewer than a number using objects.  Last week we started doubling using snowballs.  We can also double using our fingers!

We have been very creative, making winter paintings and pictures, making play dough snowflakes and snowmen.  We have used our camera to take photos of our own creations too.  Indoors and outdoors we have been playing and experimenting with ice: making predictions and asking questions about what is happening.  We have also been thinking about the birds in this icy weather.  We followed a set of instructions to make bird feeders which we have hung in our outdoor space and wrote our own shopping lists for the things that we needed to buy to make them.

Joint Schools/GMP Initiative – Operation Encompass

5th February 2018

On 26th February 2018 St Mary’s is implementing a new project that will run jointly between schools and Greater Manchester Police. This project is called Operation Encompass.  It aims to support children who are affected by domestic violence by ensuring that their school is informed.  This allows us to support the children.  If you have any other questions about this project, please do not hesitate to contact school.

Film Night

2nd February 2018

The KS2 children enjoyed the film night run by the PTA here at school on Wednesday. They had the opportunity to watch “Khumba – A Zebra’s Tale” and all enjoyed a delicious snack bag.  The children’s behaviour was excellent.  Thank you to the PTA who organised this event.

Young Voices

31st January 2018

The school choir had a fantastic time singing and dancing at the Young Voices Concert at the Manchester Arena on Tuesday.  Their behaviour was excellent both during the rehearsal and the performance. Thank you to all the members of staff and parents who supported the event.

Bikeability

16th January 2018

The children of F1 and F2 are taking part in weekly Bikeability lessons this half term.  The children are learning how to use balance bikes and having lots of fun at the same time.  Bikeability is great for getting our children active and on the move. Not only that but learning to balance on the bikes helps to develop the children’s motor skills, which are essential for all physical skills including handwriting.  The children made great progress throughout the first session, so we cannot wait to see what they will have achieved by the end of the course.

Christmas in EYFS

16th January 2018

We had a very busy and exciting week in the run up to Christmas in EYFS.  We had a fantastic time delivering the Christmas cards that we had made to our neighbours in the local community and put lots of smiles on people’s faces.  The children in F1 and F2 all did a fantastic job at performing in our nativity play.  The children sang beautifully, spoke with loud clear voices, and most importantly they smiled and enjoyed themselves!  We enjoyed a wonderful week of Christmas activities throughout our learning environment, ending in a fun filled Christmas party to celebrate this special time of year.

Choir at Morrisons

20th December 2017

Our choir brought some Christmas cheer to Morrisons on Tuesday when they sang a selection of Christmas Carols/Songs to customers and parents.  The children’s behaviour was exceptional and they raised a fantastic £236.96.

Early Years – Our Advent and Christmas Theme

19th December 2017

We have been as busy as Santa’s elves here in EYFS!  We have been busy preparing for our “Nursery Rhyme Nativity”: singing and speaking in our loud, confident voices.  We are really looking forward to our performances.

In literacy we have been reading the story of ‘Dear Santa’.  We are coming up with our own ideas to add our own pages to the story.  We have also been writing Christmas lists, letters to Santa and writing our own Christmas cards.  We have used speech bubbles and written our own little books to retell the story of the first Christmas.  In maths we have been ordering numbers to 10, 20 and beyond, as well as sequencing random numbers within 20.  We have been counting sounds accurately by playing an online game to count cracker bangs.  If you google ‘Topmarks Christmas Maths’ there are a range of fun activities in the 4-7 year old category.  In our discovery area we have been sorting and describing a range of Christmas decorations and objects.  In the construction area we have been designing and making sleighs for Santa.  Our creative area has been a festive glitter explosion!  We have been making tree decorations, designing cards and painting festive pictures to name but a few things.

We have loved our outdoor learning environment in this chilly months.  We created ice trays and troughs to investigate.  The children particularly enjoyed adding small world characters to the ice and creating their own stories.

KS1 Nativity Performance – Baubles

18th December 2017

Congratulations to our Y1 and Y2 children on their fantastic performance in our Nativity play – Baubles.   It was great to see and hear such lovely singing, confident speaking and acting. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and may have discovered new talents!  Thank you to everyone who came along to watch the performances and to the school staff for preparing the children so well.

Dragon’s Den

18th December 2017

Our Dragons’ Den Christmas Market was a great success this week.  The quality of work from the children (with a bit of help from their parents) was amazing as were their selling abilities!!  The teams made a fantastic £651.31 profit which is incredible.  The School Choir also entertained shoppers and the PTA kindly provided tea and coffee which all helped to make the event the success it was. Many thanks for your generous support.  Events like these really help the children to grow in confidence.

Year 5 Trip to Mancester Museum

18th December 2017

Year 5 had a fantastic day at the Manchester Museum, after spending the half term learning about the Ancient Egyptians it was great to put our knowledge to the test in the Ancient Egyptian workshop. From building pyramids to handling artefacts over 3000 years old, the workshop provided a great opportunity to consolidate our learning. We met Asru the 2700 year old Egyptian Mummy and got to learn lots about her life in Ancient Egypt. After a yummy lunch we explored the rest of the museum, particularly enjoying the living worlds galleries. The children has a brilliant day and they were great ambassadors of St Mary’s, with the museum staff commenting on their enthusiasm, engagement and behaviour – well done Year 5!

Year 1’s Trip to Portland Basin

8th December 2017

Year 1 visited Portland Basin to explore toys from the past.  We had a fantastic day with Hattie from Victorian times and learned a lot about Victorian toys and Christmas traditions.  We found out that lots of toys in the past were made from wood and some toys are still popular today.

Making Moon Biscuits

8th December 2017

F2 have been busy baking moon biscuits to finish off our space topic.  We had to check the ingredients list and follow a set of instructions to make them.  We worked together in groups, taking turns to mix the ingredients, then we rolled and cut the dough and added our moon craters to the top.We are sure that Baby Bear would have loved to take these with him on his space picnic!

We have been talking about following instructions in recipe books.  Do you have any recipe books at home?  Could you follow the instructions to make something together?

Year 5 Trip to the Library

7th December 2017

Years  5 thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Denton Library last week

.  The librarian welcomed the children and talked them through how the library worked and how the books were filed on the shelves.  She talked to the children about joining the library.  There was then an opportunity for the children to browse the shelves and choose a book to read.  The children were complemented on their excellent behavior and are all looking forward to planning a return visit.

Advent in F2

5th December 2017

Every class at St Mary’s are preparing for Christmas by focusing on this special time of Advent.  In F2 we have made our own Advent calendar.  Each numbered star has a little task attached to it, based on prayer and kindness.  We are preparing for Christmas by carrying out a task each day.  We are reading the Bible stories about the first Christmas and our Sacred Space in class reflects this.  We have also started a travelling crib.  Each night a child will take home our special Advent bag.  Inside is a nativity scene, a candle and a special book.  We ask that you talk about the nativity scene together as a family.  We also invite you to light the candle and say a prayer together for anybody or anything that you would like to pray for in Advent.  We light the candle to remind us that Jesus is the light of the world.  Please record your prayer or share something that you talked about in the special book: be as creative as you wish!  We will share the book in class the next day.  We wish you a thoughtful and peaceful Advent.

Super Space!

5th December 2017

We have have so much fun in our space topic, it has really brought out the excitement and creativity in our children.  We started the topic with some home learning where the children thought of things that they wanted to find out about space.  We used the internet and non-fiction books to answer lots of our interesting questions.  It turns out that the moon is not made of cheese after all!  Our main text was the Jill Murphy story ‘Whatever Next’.  We have acted it out and retold the story in different ways.   Baby Bear wrote us a letter asking for ideas of what to do in space; we used our phonics and our tricky words to write back to him!  We have been working hard at writing our ‘long legged giraffe’ letters: l,i,t,u,j,y.  Children have enjoyed practising these at home too.  In maths we have been identifying and describing 2D and 3D shapes.  We have hunted 3D shapes around the school and made space rockets from 3D shapes.  We have made space pictures using our 2D shapes.  We have also done lots of estimating and counting groups of objects using our moon rocks, as well as some adding by combining two groups.  We have done lots of creative activities including making cylinder  rocket models, oil pastel space scenes and play dough aliens.  Outside we have been ordering number rockets, blowing planets using our bubbles and making the International Space Station in the den making area.

Fireworks Frenzy!

13th November 2017

To finish our autumn topic in F2 we have been thinking all about Bonfire Night.  We shared our experiences and watched firework display videos together.  We generated describing words and pretended to be fireworks, whooshing and popping and crackling!  We recited firework poems together and wrote our own firework poems based on the noise words we had listed.  We are getting good at using our phonics to have a go at writing new words.  We are trying to include finger spaces between our words too.  In our maths area we continued our firework theme by writing numbers in glitter with paintbrushes.  In the malleable area we used jewels and glittery play dough to make firework patterns.  In the creative area we have made oil pastel firework pictures and 3D rockets from cylinders.  We loved marble rolling in paint to make firework art too.  Outdoors we used the ribbons to create some fantastic firework dances, making weaving paths around each other.

Year 4 – Roman Day

9th November 2017

As part of the Year 4 Roman Topic the children were visited by a Roman Soldier who told them all about what it was like to be in the Roman Army.

Autumn in Nurser

6th November 2017

Over the past two weeks F1 have been learning about Autumn. We have been learning about the changes that we see in our environment during this time and have been exploring lots of autumn objects such as leaves, conkers and pine cones. We have created autumn pictures and explored leaf prints. We have also drawn lots of autumn pictures and explored our autumn small world. We have used autumn objects in the maths area and have been very busy counting and sorting them. Our core text for this topic has been ‘The Little Red Hen.’ We have created our own story, by drawing the key events and had a go at creating our own book. We have also enjoyed playing with the story spoons. We have used them to help us retell the story.

EYFS – Autumn

27th October 2017

Here in EYFS we have been learning all about autumn.  Our main text has been Owl Babies and we have had so much fun acting out the story and re-enacting it on our small world table.  We have been writing speech bubbles for the characters and labelling pictures of the story, using the letters we know to have a go.  We  have been very lucky to have a visit from owl baby Bill in our classroom!  We asked him lots of questions and we have exchanged letters since.

We have been working hard learning our numbers and ordering them.  we have enjoyed conker rolling games which help us to practise identifying numbers.  We have also been using autumn objects to help us with our counting (using our pointing finger) and also adding two groups.

Thank you for all of your autumn artefacts, our table is overflowing!  We have enjoyed pattern making with them, looking carefully at them and making observational drawings.  We have also made owls, painted autumn trees and sang lots of autumn songs.

20th October 2017

Fire Safety talk

19th October 2017

Year 6 were visited by the fire crew from Hyde Fire station to receive a talk on staying safe during the firework season. During the talk the children asked some impressive questions and showed that they had a good knowledge of what to do and what not to do as well as learning more extremely useful information. In addition, during the visit, the children had the chance to try on some of the equipment and had a look around the fire engine . Thank you to the firemen for giving up their time to visit us.

EYFS – No Pens Wednesday

13th October 2017

Our school is taking part in Tameside and Glossop’s  Talking Together initiative.  This promotes language and communication as the most important building blocks for reading and writing.  We promote language and talk opportunities within our classrooms and encourage parents to seek out opportunities for talk at home.  Talking Together promotes monthly challenges to help this: for more information follow Talking Together Tameside and Glossop on Facebook.

As part of the monthly challenge our school took part in No Pens Wednesday on 4th October.  All pens and writing equipment were removed from the classroom and we had to rely on language and talking for communication.  We had fun playing listening games, sequencing familiar stories and talking about ourselves.  We talked about the different parts of our bodies  and labelled them together.  We shared stories, talked about them and sang songs together.  Lots of fun and learning and not a pen in sight.

F2 “Ourselves Topic”

2nd October 2017

The children of F2 are settling well into our classroom routines and are exploring our learning environment.  We have enjoyed thinking about how we are different and special, just like Elmer the elephant.  We have acted out the story of Elmer and retold it using a story map.  We have even made our own Elmer books.  As another part of our topic we are exploring our senses.  We have talked about seeing and used describing words while looking through kaleidoscopes and viewers.  We have thought about the sense of touch and described items that we have put into feely tubs.  This week we are going on a listening walk to see what we can hear around our school.  In RE we are thinking all about how God made our wonderful world, including us!

Thank you for taking part in our number hunt at home.  We have enjoyed sharing all of the numbers that we have found in class.  You can continue to support your child by helping them to recognise numbers first to 10, then to 20 and beyond, and placing them in the correct order.

Year 5 Guitars

2nd October 2017

Football success

29th September 2017

On Tuesday our school football team had a great start to their first Tameside Football Festival. Playing three games the boys ended the tournament unbeaten, drawing two (both of which they were unlucky not to win) and winning one. Throughout the team the boys were fantastic and they are now through to play in their first Trophy tournament next Tuesday. Good luck.

Robinwood

28th September 2017

Year 6 had a great time at Robinwood last week. Throughout the three days the children took on such challenges as the giant swing, zip-wire, dungeon of doom and the dreaded piranha pool! During their time at the activity centre the children showed great teamwork, enthusiasm and outstanding behaviour meaning that they really enjoyed their time. Well done year 6.

Year 5 – PHSE New Beginnins

25th September 2017

In PSHE Year 5 have been looking at new beginnings, this weeks lesson focused how the children felt when they were in a new situation. They could all recall times when they were new to something and the feelings they experienced, the children in groups created roleplays acting out ‘new situations’. They were able to show empathy and understanding.

Year 5 North America Topic – Topographic Maps Website

25th September 2017

In Year 5 our topic this half term is North America. We have been exploring lots of different aspects of this continent, including the topography of the land. Using salt dough we created 3D topographic maps of the continent that showed the elevations and landforms. Year 5 had lots of fun molding and shaping the salt dough to create the mountains, lakes and flat plains of North America.

Year 5 Literacy

18th September 2017

In literacy Year 5 are reading ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls Bathroom’ by Louis Sachar. In our literacy lessons we have been carrying out some roleplay as the mean, nasty Bradley Chalkers and the new boy Jeff Fishkin. This then led into writing diary entries from Bradley’s viewpoint.

Our first week in F2

12th September 2017

All of the children have settled so well into F2.  We have been familiarising ourselves with the class routines and how we use the areas in our indoor and outdoor learning environment.  We have begun our ‘All About Me’ topic by thinking about ourselves and what makes us different and special.  We have made self portraits, talked about our favourite books and songs, and roleplayed our own experiences in the home corner.  We are also learning about the story of Elmer and thinking about how fantastic it is to be unique!  Lots more fun and learning to follow…

Talking Together

18th July 2017

Here at St Mary’s we are supporting and to promote Tameside’s Talking Together initiative.  Please visit www.tameside.gov.uk/talkingtogether for more information and please ‘like’ the Talking Together Tameside and Glossop Facebook page.  The initiative focuses on the importance of talk for child development and there are different themes and challenges every month.

The challenge this month is:

Family Games Night – we are encouraging all families to have a games night – this might include playing board games, playing some of the games which will be posted on the Facebook page which don’t involve any props (e.g. charades, I spy, 20 questions etc.) or children making their own board games.  Children in EYFS have made their own Bear Hunt board games and invented their own rules for them which they are taking home to share too.  Making the games and talking about the instructions created lots of fantastic talk opportunities, as did playing them.  Feel free to share any of your games with the Talk Together Facebook page.  We hope you enjoy sharing them with your child: remember- play is our brain’s favourite way to learn!

EYFS – Picnic Time for Teddy Bears!

17th July 2017

As part of our bear topic, today all of the children in EYFS have enjoyed a teddy bears’ picnic.  To prepare, children in F2 have followed instructions to bake cakes for everybody and written lists of picnic food for teddy bears.  We have had lots of fun, singing teddy bear songs and playing games with our bears.  The bears have also enjoyed playing in our classroom: children chose to make dens for them in the construction area.  We have also been writing about them in our writing area.  If only our bears came into school with us every day!

EYFS Sports Day

17th July 2017

A fantastic day was had by all at the EYFS sports day.  The sun shone for us and everybody was smiling!  All children participated in the beanbag balancing race, pick up race, egg and spoon race, and the running race (a firm favourite).  But the competitive spirit was most evident in the mum and dad races!  Our children showed excellent sportsmanship and were fantastic at cheering each other on.

Orange in No Man’s Land

17th July 2017

In literacy Year 5 are studying the book Oranges in No Man’s Land by Elizabeth Laird, the book is based upon a little girls experiences in Beirut during the civil war that raged in Lebanon. The children have enjoyed the book and have produced some fantastic pieces of work applying their skills and knowledge in their writing. Within this work the children prepared and performed some role-plays focusing on Ayesha’s experiences, the children demonstrated a deep level of empathy and understanding towards the characters and this then informed their writing back in the classroom.

Brilliant Bugsy

14th July 2017

Year 6 and year 5 wowed audiences over the course of two nights with their amazing performances of Bugsy. Critics throughout the country are hailing it as the best new musical since The Lion King, with its mix of old and new and have stated that it should be given a run on the Westend but only if the magnificent cast retain their roles!

Throughout the two nights the children performed brilliantly singing, dancing and acting their way through the performances with the kind of skill, talent and attitude usually associated with Olivier award winners.

Well done to all the children, the rave reviews are thoroughly deserved.

Year 5 – STEM Workshop

14th July 2017

Year 5 enjoyed their trip over to St Thomas More for the second part of their maths STEM workshop, the children immersed themselves in the high school environment and their behaviour was exemplary, the teachers were very complimentary. The children again demonstrated a high level of code cracking skills and managed to decode some very complicated codes. A great experience for the children, developing their problem  solving skills.

Swimming Success

6th July 2017

Congratulations to the St. Mary’s swimming team who have recently been crowned champions of Tameside at the most recent swimming gala.

Our Visitors – Washing our Hands

6th July 2017

We had some special visitors in our classroom  who were teaching us about the importance of washing our hands properly.  We learnt about different germs and how they are spread.  We used special light boxes to look at where the dirt was on our hands that we couldn’t see.  We learnt how to wash our hands properly and we designed posters on our writing table to teach other people about this too.

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt!

6th July 2017

We have had a wonderful time engaging with our bears topic here in EYFS.  Our main text is Michael Rosen’s ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.  We have shared the story, reenacted it outdoors and retold it using a story map.  Next we will be changing the story to add our very own part to it.  We have also been retelling the story on our small world table and have made our own bear hunt puppets for the puppet theatre too.  In our maths area we have been grabbing handfuls of bears and counting them out in 1s and 2s.  We have been finding more more and less than quantities of bears too.  We have also been thinking about halving by sharing fruit between 2 bears for their picnic.  We have made playdough bears, plus bear caves in the construction area and in the junk modelling.  We have shared many bear books and talked about our favourites.  It has been lovely to see so many children engaging with our topic at home and bringing in work that they have produced.  What motivated learners we have!

Buddhist Meditation – Year 5

29th June 2017

Year 5’s RE topic this term is ‘World Faiths’, as part of this topic we have been looking at the Buddhist faith – Buddhism. We have been learning about the beliefs and traditions within this faith, Buddhists regularly meditate and year 5 wanted to try meditation for themselves. It was an enjoyable experience, everyone joined in and participated in the meditation.

Science Week in EYFS

27th June 2017

In EYFS we have been on a minibeast hunt!  We found out information about different minibeasts from around the world.  We talked learnt that different minibeasts are suited to live in different places, or habitats.  We talked about where we live, the creatures we see and the places that we are likely to find them.  We then made predictions about the sort of minibeasts that we might find on a bug hunt in our school.  We hunted in all of the different nooks and crannies in our school grounds, recording what we found and where we found it on a table, and taking photographs.  We had lots of fun as we explored.

A Diet Coke Explosion at St Mary’s!!!

23rd June 2017

Year 5 have had great fun during science week, finding out about nucleation. This involved creating diet coke and mentos geysers. These geysers are caused by a process called nucleation, where the carbon dioxide in the soda is attracted to the small bumps on the surface of the Mentos. That creates so much pressure that the soda goes flying up into the air quite spectacularly. Mr Clarke volunteered to release the mentos into the bottle whilst Mrs Moran stood at a safe distance taking the photos.

Tudor Day – Bramall Hall

22nd June 2017

Before the half term holiday, Year 4 enjoyed an exciting trip to Bramall Hall where they became Tudors for the day. Dressed in Tudor costumes they took part in many different activities which helped them understand how the Tudors lived. These included: making a nose gay, playing Tudor games, dancing and learning about the musical instruments of the time. All the children entered into the spirit of the day by replacing their usual lunch with bread, cheese, ham and water. Not a packet of crisps or chocolate bar in sight.

Science Week – Year 4

22nd June 2017

During Science Week, Year 4 have been learning how shadows are formed. By drawing around the shadow of one of the children at different times during the morning, we could see how the position and size of the shadow had changed. We are learning that this due to the fact that as the earth rotates the sun appears to change position in the sky.

Farewell Gingerbread man, hello BEARS!

22nd June 2017

Last week we finished our Gingerbread Man theme in F2.  We made our own gingerbread men in the malleable area.  We designed and made different vehicles in the construction area to help the gingerbread man to escape!  In literacy, we read the story from the sly fox’s point of view.  We learnt that he had no money and was so hungry, but the shop keeper refused to help him, so he ate the gingerbread man.  We came up with a list of suggestions for what the fox could have done instead: these included checking his piggy bank, eating at his friend’s house, going fishing, and even getting a job!  We wrote letters to the fox to tell him all of our ideas.

This week we started our new bear topic and are currently reading ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.  We invite you to share different bear stories with your child at home.  The children can bring in their favourite bear stories to share with the class.

We have followed children’s interests on the investigation table after several children brought back shells from their holidays.  We have been drawing shells and pebbles, describing them and sorting them.

Hathersage

21st June 2017

Year 6 enjoyed a fantastic day out in the picturesque village Hathersage in the Peak District on Tuesday. As a reward for all their hard work throughout the year they were taken away for the day to study the village and learn about it’s history before enjoying an afternoon in the outdoor swimming pool.

Shortly after arriving the children met their guide (Mr Whittle snr) and embarked on a tour of the village which involved finding out information and details about the village (such as Little John is buried there) and completing a quiz. Following this, they walked to their lunch destination up a very steep hill and settled down for an al fresco lunch; after they had escaped the midges! After descending the hill the children finally made it to the pool where they enjoyed an afternoon which mainly involved jumping in; getting out; jumping in; getting out; jumping in and so on.

The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and their enthusiasm and behaviour was exceptional with even members of the public commenting on what a well behaved group of children they were. Well done to Year 6 on a fantastic day and my thanks to Mrs Smith and Mr Whittle snr for helping.

Olympian Visit!

15th June 2017

Great excitement at St Mary’s today with a visit from Olympic gymnast and bronze medalist Beth Tweddle!!

The children were thrilled to meet the famous gymnast and were lucky enough to ask the Olympian some questions about her gymnastics career.

Beth spoke to the children during assembly about her achievements and how she reached the dizzy heights of Olympic success.

Beth’s secret to her success was hard work, dedication and lots of practice, she encouraged the children to always try their best.

A wonderful experience for the St Mary’s c

hildren, we all enjoyed meeting Beth.

Green Fingers

26th May 2017

We have been busy planting and growing here in EYFS.  We have grown cress, sunflowers and beans. We made cress diaries to record how our seeds changed.  We are hoping to grow our very own beanstalk, just like Jack!  We have also created a garden area in our outdoors where we are looking after our new plants.

We have been thinking about God’s wonderful creation in F2.  We have been on a nature walk, looking at all of the wonderful things around us that we are thankful for.

The Gingerbread Man

26th May 2017

F2 discovered that our mystery visitor that messed up our classroom was, in fact, the Gingerbread Man!  We had a letter and book from the Little Old Lady telling us that he had ran away.  We made Lost posters for her which described him.  We have learnt how to retell the story using a story map.  This week we decided to bake the little Old Lady (and ourselves) new gingerbread men and we have written out instructions for how to do it.

In maths we just HAD to eat some gingerbread men to make a pictogram!  Our pictogram showed how many people ate the head first, how many ate a leg first and who went for an arm.  The vast majority of our class are head biters!  We have been adding and subtracting using the raisins on gingerbread men; we have been measuring gingerbread men using a variety of materials and we have been making repeating patterns.

Our creative class have been making stick puppets to retell the story in our puppet theatre area.  We have designed our own gingerbread men and made maps of the Gingerbread Man’s journey.  We learnt a song about the story and performed it with instruments.  We used beebots in ICT to programme a set of instructions to help the gingerbread man to reach the river.  Over in our construction area we have designed and made bridges so that the poor Gingerbread Man does not end up in the fox’s mouth!  We have also loved taking on the different story roles in our outdoor learning environment.

Strange Events in F2!

11th May 2017

Yesterday we got back from our lunch to find that our writing table was covered with tiny, dusty footprints and a trail of sweets and sprinkles!  The children and staff are very confused about who our mystery visitor could have been that made such a mess of our classroom.  We have been gathering clues and writing lists of suspects. It has caused a real buzz in our classroom.  Suggestions of the culprit have ranged from the elves from The Elves and the Shoemaker or Burglar Bill, to Donald Trump!  The investigation continues…

F2 – Our Trip to the Farm

11th May 2017

We had a fabulous trip to Cockfields Farm.  Thank you so much to our amazing helpers!  We fed lots of different animals as well as holding, stroking and cuddling lots more.  We met alpacas, pigs, chameleons and even a boa constrictor!  We learnt lots and had an amazing experience.  Bouncing on the trampoline together and eating our packed lunches were firm highlights too!

Year 5 Collective Worship

8th May 2017

On Thursday, Year 5 led us in their Collective Worship which was focused around how Jesus is with us in the world today through prayer. Through role plays and well-read parts, they showed the rest of the school the many different ways we can pray and listen to Jesus in our daily lives.

Year 5 Anglo Saxon Trip

3rd May 2017

Before Easter, Year 5 went on an exciting trip to Tatton Park where they became Anglo-Saxon farmers for the day. They took part in many different activities which helped them understand how the Saxons lived and survived during that period in history.  From making pottery to learning how build a protective wall during their weapon and shield workshop, they had an action-packed and enjoyable day.

Jack and the Beanstalk

3rd May 2017

As part of our Spring theme we have been reading Jack and the Beanstalk.  We found magic beans in our classroom which grew overnight into a huge beanstalk.  We were lucky enough to have Jack himself visit our classroom!  We thought of lots of interesting questions that we could ask him.  We have been retelling the story in different ways and will be writing our own version of the story.  and We are also investigating plants.  We have been looking carefully at different plants and we will be growing our own plants too.

Ever since our Easter performance we have been music mad!  We have enjoyed using the musical instruments outside and are still singing our Easter songs.  We have been performing them on our stage too.  The children in our class have also been making their own puppets in our creative area, so we are following this interest and have set up our own puppet theatre.

Spring and Easter Week – Reception

27th April 2017

During Holy Week we focused on the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection on the first Easter.  We loved celebrating Easter with our Easter bonnet parade, thank you parents and carers for helping us with our hats!  In our classroom we have been thinking about changes that happen in spring: flowers growing, animals being born, and a little bit of sunshine at last!  We have been writing all about spring, making observational drawings of spring flowers, and designing our own Easter Eggs.  Outdoors we have had lots of fun planting and playing with soil in our mud kitchen.  We have been adding and taking away using flowers.  We are all learning to order and recognise to 20 and beyond.  Some of us are learning to count groups of objects by counting in twos.

Alien Invasion!

5th April 2017

This morning, Year 1 discovered a spaceship crash in St. Mary’s garden and used their detective skills to try and work out who it belonged to. They found many usual items such as stripy gloves with 3 fingers, glasses with 4 eye holes and many silver nuts and bolts. Afterwards, they wrote fantastic ‘wanted’ posters to try and track down the alien creature. Take a look at some of their fantastic writing!

Great Guitarists

30th March 2017

Since September, Years 5 and 6 have been receiving guitar and singing lessons from Tameside Music Service. For year 6 this is their second year and the first for year 5. They have learnt a number of pieces and some which have linked to their topics in history and geography such as WW2. To showcase to the school their talents they performed an assembly for the school in which they sang beautifully and played wonderfully. Well done to both year groups.

A Wonderful Visit!

22nd March 2017

As part of our People Who Help Us topic, we invited our lollipop lady to visit our class.  We all made her thank you cards and presented them to her.  We had thought about questions that we wanted to ask her, and she told us all about her job.  We even got to hold her stick!

Our Firefighter Visit

15th March 2017

As part of our People Who Help Us topic, we had a special visit from some firemen to EYFS!  The firefighters talked to us about their jobs and we asked them lots of questions.  We had a look around the fire engine and got to sit inside.  We even got to spray the hose – what an amazing day!

People Who Help Us

15th March 2017

EYFS have had so much fun learning all about People Who Help Us.  We have set up a police station in our role play area and are busy fighting crime!  We have been learning all about firefighters: we have been being fighters in our outdoor area and making firefighter stories in our small world area.  In our discovery area we are thinking about dentists and how to keep our teeth healthy.  We have been painting fire engines and making firefighter pictures on the computer.  In literacy we have been writing all about Chief Rhino to the Rescue.  In maths we have been ordering numbers and finding the number one more and one less.  Busy busy busy!
