Throughout the week the children took part in art, drama, ICT and music activities to help them further understand the effects. This culminated on Friday with the children explaining and showing off their work to whole school, which its self was a sea of blue for the day. Look below at the variety of activities the children presented.

Cross-country Success
Well done again to our Under 9’s girls cross-country team who put in a fantastic effort on a cold Saturday morning. Once again the girls put in a tremendous effort and secured excellent results which leaves them sitting in 1st place with one more meet to go. We know the girls have been training hard and putting in extra sessions, so hopefully they can continue their success and bring home the trophy.

School Games Gold Award
For the second year running St. Mary’s has been awarded the Sainsbury’s School Games gold award. this award is in recognition of all the sport we take part in at St. Mary’s as well as the many competitions we enter throughout the year. We were very privileged to be joined by Councillor Dawson-Lane and the Mayor and Mayoress, who presented this award in front of the whole school. A big thank you should go to all the staff who help with sports clubs and competitions and in particular Mrs Evans whose hard work and enthusiasm has helped us achieve this award. Year 6 trip to RAF Cosford
As part of their topic on The Battle of Britain, Year 6 spent the day at RAF Cosford. After a long two hour drive they were finally able to come up close and personal with the very planes they had been learning about in school; the legendary spitfire (which was actually used in the Battle of Britain), hurricanes and the German Luftwaffe.
In addition, the children had the opportunity to touch and find out about artefacts and find out about some of the pilots who fought during the war for both sides. These included; Amy Johnson a member of the ATA; Lee Ashton, a Lincoln Bomber gunner; Hannah Reitcsh, a German pilot and the ghost of one of the planes in the hanger. They also had the chance to look around other parts of the museum and seeing RAF planes from the last 100 years as well as learning about the science of flight. A fantastic day was had by all and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Once again the behaviour and enthusiasm of the children was a credit to the school.
CAFOD – Brighten Up Our World
Thank you to all the children and families for their generous donations to the CAFOD appeal this year. Thanks to your donations we have raised a magnificent £117.48. In addition to we have an overwhelming response to the donations of food towards the St. Mary’s Parish food bank. Thank you again for your generosity and support.
6W Crucial Crew
6W enjoyed an afternoon at Crucial Crew today, where they learnt a lot about staying safe when growing up. They had presentations from the police, road safety, the countryside alliance, as well as learning about staying safe online, cyber bullying and much more. The children where exceptionally well behaved, in fact all three teams got full marks for behaviour, listening and question answering – meaning they to share the trophy!
6W Collective Worship – CAFOD
Year 6 Brightened up everyone’s day as they introduced the school to this year’s CAFOD appeal to ‘Brighten Up Our World.’ Through the stories of Creation and the colours of the rainbow quarrelling, the children reminded us about looking after each other and God’s creation. In addition, they launched the CAFOD appeal, which asks that the children dress up in bright clothes on Friday 2nd October and bring in a donation for CAFOD and a tinned food item that will be donated to the St. Mary’s food bank.

Robinwood
Year Six have returned from an action packed few days away at the Robinwood Activity Centre, Todmordon. From start to finish the children enjoyed a variety of fun, thrilling, physically and mentally challenging activities that really pushed the children to their limits. These included braving the famous piranha pool; conquering the wobbly trapeze; working together to escape the dungeon of doom; building rafts (although not all floated); swinging from great heights; crawling through caves and zip-wiring, to name but a few. The children had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. There behaviour and attitude throughout the trip was exemplary and I’m sure they have created memories that will stay with them for years to come.
Armed Forces Day
During the Autumn term, whilst studying World War l, the pupils in Year 5 took part in an exciting project with the Arts Council called ‘Denton Remembers’.
They worked with a community artist and a local poet over a number of weeks to design and
produce a Poppy Plaque to commemorate the thousands of soldiers that died during the war. Their fantastic plaques, and the work they produced in their log books, were displayed in a tent during ‘Armed Forces Day’ which took place in Victoria Park on Saturdy 27th June.
Thank you to all the pupils and parents who came along to see their work on display!
What a performance!

“I wish to congratulate ALL at St Mary’s upon the outcome of the recent inspection by the Diocese into Religious Education in school. In particular, I note that the report praises the outstanding commitment of our children and their families..as well as the outstanding work of the teaching staff and the governing body. I also wish to commend the work of the Parish Children Liturgy Team as well as the Faith Friends of the parish who make a huge contribution to the spiritual life of our children each Sunday and in preparation for the Sacraments. I note the comments of the Inspector who calls for the development of further links betwenn the school and parish in the future. I am sure that with the leadership and guidance of our Headteacher and the Parish Priest, this goal too will be achieved.”
Swimming Success!
Yr2 St. Lucia
This term we have been exploring ‘Saint Lucia.’
First of all we practised our map skills by locating where Saint Lucia is and how to travel there. We found out about the climate and thought about what you would need to pack to go on holiday. We explored the landscape and discovered the wildlife with help from ‘Animals Intuition’ to help us think about habitats in Science.
We then designed new rainforest creatures based on what we learnt about animals. Some examples included a ‘Sparrot’ with features of a spider and parrot as well as a ‘Parfrog’ which looked like a parrot with frogs legs!
In Design Technology we explored different types of musical instruments. We created tropical fruit patterns before designing and making our own musical instruments.
2015 CAFOD water challenge
Over the past couple of weeks, the children throughout the school have been taking part in the CAFOD water challenge, in order to raise money for people less fortunate than ourselves. The event was organised by year 5, who designed the obstacle course, sent out letters and sponsor forms and then ran the events on the day, providing marshalling and guidance. The event has been a huge success and as a school we have raised well over £1000 for CAFOD. Well done to all the children and thank you to all of Year 5, both children and staff for organising the event.
Easter Praise
What a performance by Years 3 and 4 to re-tell the Easter story. All of the St. Mary’s community gathered in church to witness the children’s performance, which reminded us about the true meaning of Easter, from Jesus riding into Jerusalem; the last supper; his betrayal and trial; his death on the cross and finally when he rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. Well done to all of year 3 and 4 for their hard work in putting in such a great performance.

Comic Relief – Pointless – silly faces
St. Mary’s put on their silliest faces (normal faces for teachers then!) to raise money for Comic Relief. In addition to this, Year 3 hosted a pointless style quiz, featuring contestants from each class in KS2 and a teacher’s team, with the eventual winners being Year 4. Again, St. Mary’s showed their generous and charitable nature raising over £200. thank you to year 3 and Mr Brown for organising the day.
World Book Day 2015
Vikings for a day!
Year 6 had a real life Viking in school, to talk to them about Viking history. They got to see and touch some real life Viking weapons, clothes and animal skins. We even had a small fire in the classroom. During the afternoon the children made some traditional Viking bread, which was a little hard and Viking
long ships.
Young Voices 2015
Thirty children from school attended the annual young voices concert at the Manchester Arena and proved to be in strong voice. They were joined by hundreds of other children from throughout the North West as well as some celebrities. Thank you to Mrs Withers, Mrs Nickeas and Miss Davies for organising and accompanying the children.

Guidance on Stranger Danger
Whilst the risk posed by strangers is rare, it’s really important to make children aware of simple tips they can follow to keep themselves a little safer. This video on Stranger Danger is designed to highlight a few key points, which could be used to help an important conversation with your child. It is aimed at children aged 4 – 11 years.
We would advise you to talk about who your safe adults are and where there are safe places near you if help is needed. It’s also important to think about safety on the internet and use of mobile phone apps and games that have a ‘chat’ function as this can be just as dangerous as a stranger in the street.

Basketball Tournament
Well done to our Year 5 and 6 basketball team, who after qualifying for the Tameside, competition came 3rd in their group and narrowly missed out on qualification for the semi-finals on points difference. The team played exceptionally well against some tough opponents and were
extremely unlucky to be eliminated. Well played to all members of the team.
National Support School
The National College for Teaching and Leadership have designated St Mary’s as a National Support School. This is official recognition that St Mary’s has a proven track record of outstanding leadership and management, achieves outstanding results for the community, and a track record of helping other schools to improve.
This designation comes in conjunction with our Headteacher, Deidre Reeves, being appointed a National Leader of Education.
We are delighted that the work all staff at St Mary’s have been doing for some time now has been recognised at a national level. Ofsted has judged St Mary’s to be an outstanding school and with this new status, we now have the opportunity to expand the support we are giving to other schools. At the same time, we contiue to keep improving the quality of education we provide for all our pupils.
Creative Arts
24 children from years 5 and 6 enjoyed two days of artistic fun over half-term to create a masterpiece that will certainly brighten up school. With the help of Howard and Rene from Creative Arts and Minds, the children sketched, designed, drew and painted an 8 foot mural that shows off everything that is great about St. Mary’s. the children worked exceptionally hard and had a great time undertaking the project.
Our thanks go to Howard and Rene for guiding the children through the project and Mrs Evans for coming in and helping during the half-term break.

St Mary’s achieves Bronze for the Food4Life Schools Award
The Tameside and Glossop Children’s Nutrition Team have been in school recently to assess our food and nutrition provision and complete an initial assessment. Their report found the following good practices:
- The school has a Nutrition Champion
- Healthy Eating is actively promoted as part of our Curriculum provision
- Fruit is available to KS1 at morning break and is the only snack permitted to be brought from home by KS2 pupils
- Drinking water is freely available throughout the school day.
- The school lunchtime menus meet the school food standards
- Year 5 have completed the Healthy Lifestyle programme and families have attended the Ready, Steady, Cook & Eat programme.
- No edible birthday treats are permitted in school
- The School Council regularly discuss healthy eating and the move towards personalised menus was a result of their work.
The report also made the following suggestions for the school to work on to further improve their provision
- Staff training
- Promotion and monitoring of Healthy Lunchboxes
- School menus to show all items offered to pupils (carbohydrate, vegetable and dessert options) and school menus to be displayed around school and on the school website.
- Portion size to be age appropriate and school to adopt a policy of no longer offering seconds.
The School Council are also looking into the promotion of Healthy Lunchboxes and a meeting has been arranged to enable them to share their views with a member of the Children’s Nutrition Team. We await the outcome with interest!
Year 4 put their trust in each other and God
Harvest Collection
Year 6 introduced the Harvest Festival this year during their collective worship. They asked the school to bring in donations of food that could be donated to the local food back and again St. Mary’s gave an excellent response. Thank you to everyone who donated and to year 6 and Fr Peter fro helping organise the collection and delivery to the food bank.
Class 6W – Harvest Fast Day – The Big Silly Share – 10th October
Class 6W CAFOD Harvest Fast Day – ‘The Big Silly Share’ – 10th October

This Harvest Fast Day asks us to help make a space at your table for families around the world who don’t have enough to eat.
“It is not God’s will for some to have everything and others to have nothing” (Oscar Romero).
- Half of the people in the world who go hungry are actually farmers.
- Every day tasty fruit and vegetables are thrown away and never make it to our shops because they aren’t the right shape, size or colour.
- We throw away more food from our homes than we do packaging.
CAFOD say our food system is silly but this harvest Class 6W are serious about doing something and want to work in partnership with the SVP of St. Mary’s Parish to change it.
Class 6W ask that on Friday 10th October, the children wear something silly to school and bring a non perishable food donation into school as contribution to the parish’s SVP Food Bank collection. Contributions to CAFOD will also be most welcome.
Generous God, thank you for our food.
May we appreciate what we have and never take it for granted.
We pray for those in Denton and around the world, who do not have enough
to provide for their family.
We pray for a good harvest, for generosity and love,
as we seek a better, fairer world.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Class 6W would like to thank you for your support.
Robinwood 2014
From Monday 22nd to Wednesday 24th September 27 children from year 6 attended the Robinwood activity centre. They undertook such activities as climbing, caving, giant swing, trapeze and the famous ‘Piranha Pool’.
Every child had a go at all the activities, many of them overcoming fears in order to take part. Some have even showed to have the knack for certain ones and will hopefully keep them up in the future.
the behaviour of the children was fantastic and throughout the trip numerous members of the Robinwood staff commented on the children’s listening skills; outstanding behaviour; their exceptional manners and their great attitude.

Years 5 and 6 ChildLine Assembly and Workshop
The ChildLine Schools Service has recently visited children in Years 5 and 6 to provide them with key messages about keeping safe. It can be beneficial for these messages to be reinforced at home. The NSPCC has developed some guides for all parents of primary school aged children to speak to your child about keeping safe – called the Underwear rule.
You can find guides to the Underwear Rule to help you have simple conversations about keeping safe from abuse at www.nspcc.org.uk/underwear.
You can speak to an advisor for further advice or request a hard copy guide for parents and carers by phoning the NSPCC Helpline on 0800 800 5000. You can also visit www.nspcc.org.uk/parents for other advice on keeping your child safe.
Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows – 15th September
All the children attended Mass at St. Mary’s Church to celebrate the Feast Day of our patron saint, Our Lady of Sorrows and the beginning of the New Year School. During Mass, we were reminded that Our Lady was with Jesus at times of great pain and sorrow as well as times of joy and happiness. Mary was also a witness to the Resurrection.
The children’s behaviour and response was excellent during Mass and we received many positive comments from parents and parishioners who were able to attend mass.
Meet Tommy Atkins
On Wednesday 10th September had the chance to meet Corporal Tommy Atkins from the Manchester Regiment. The children were introduced to Corporal Atkins during a whole school assembly, before having the chance to at life for a soldier during World War One in more depth during class workshops. Universal Infant Free School Meals
The government has announced that, from September 2014, all state funded infant school children (ie those in reception, year 1 and year 2) will receive a free school lunch.
The School Food Plan (www.schoolfoodplan.com) has presented evidence that universal free school meals leads to positive improvements in health and attainment and helps families with the cost of living.
We have recently held discussions with Diamond Diners, who currently provide our school meals, they have confirmed that they will be able to continue with the personalised menu options we currently offer to all our children.
To assist us with our planning, we would like to find out how many parents intend to take up this offer of a free school lunch from September 2014. A copy of a letter recently sent to eligible parents may be found by clicking the link below.
Please help us to find out more about bullying at St. Mary’s
For some children, bullying can be a real concern and we want to make sure that we are doing all we can to keep your child safe in school. This means we need you to help us to find out if your child has or is being bullied in school. We are sending out a questionnaire to all parents and carers this week which we would like you to complete and return to school by Friday 16th May.
We will not ask for your name, and your answers in this survey are confidential.
Your support in completing this questionnaire is much appreciated.
EYFS Easter Bonnet Parade
He is Risen -Y3 and Y4
Years 4 and 3 put on a fantastic performance of the Easter story to a packed St. Mary’s Church. They retold the story from the moment Jesus entered Jerusalem, through the last supper, being betrayed by Judas, Jesus’ trial, the pain of the crucifixion and finally rising from the dead.
It was an exceptional performance by all. Beautifully read and acted, with outstanding solos and singing all round.
Heroes and Villains House Egg Competition
Children from KS2 have been busy making some very interesting eggs for this House competition. The theme for this years competition was Heroes and Villains. We had designs ranging heroes such as firemen and iron to villains such as Mr Brown! There was one winner for each year group, who all received a prize.
Easter Bonnet Parade
The children from KS1 and EYFS put on a wonderful show when they paraded and sang songs in their fantastic Easter Bonnets. Everyone had obviously gone to a lot of effort, and there were some truly excellent designs. Well done to everyone.
