Years 5 and 6 ChildLine Assembly and Workshop

The ChildLine Schools Service has recently visited children in Years 5 and 6 to provide them with key messages about keeping safe.  It can be beneficial for these messages to be reinforced at home.  The NSPCC has developed some guides for all parents of primary school aged children to speak to your child about keeping safe – called the Underwear rule.

You can find guides to the Underwear Rule to help you have simple conversations about keeping safe from abuse at www.nspcc.org.uk/underwear.

You can speak to an advisor for further advice or request a hard copy guide for parents and carers by phoning the NSPCC Helpline on 0800 800 5000. You can also visit www.nspcc.org.uk/parents for other advice on keeping your child safe.

Year 6 Crucial Crew and Victorian School

On Friday 7th October the pupils from Year 6 enjoyed a trip to Crucial Crew, followed by a visit to the Victorian School, at Portland Basin.

At Crucial Crew the children learned about fire safety, contacting and speaking to the police, looking after and staying safe in the country side, dealing with hate crime, and other issues that arise as they grow up. At each of the stations the teams were awarded points, and it was team 7 that came out on top. The children really enjoyed their time at Crucial Crew and learnt an awful lot.

After having some lunch the children then went back in time to the Victorian Era. Here they met their extremely strict school mistress. The children were really put through their paces, having their finger nails checked, chanting their times tables and writing using slate boards and pencils. Obadiah, Albert and Ava all behaved well although their was one ‘bare-faced liar’ who had to receive a rather harsh punishment! Finally, the children had to bow or curtsy to the ‘school inspector’ on their way out of the school!

Again, the children were exceptionally well behaved and it was commented on by members of the public and staff and both centers how polite, well behaved and enthusiastic the children were. Well don Year 6.

KS2 SATs and End of Year Tests and Teacher Assessment

Congratulations to all our children on their end of year test results.  Our data analysis shows that all year groups continue to make accelerated progress. Our EYFS and KS1 results are above national average and our KS2 SAT results continue to be well above national results (comparisons are based on national data from 2012).  We are confident that each child tried his or her best in each of the tests or teacher assessments. Parents should feel very proud of their determined attitudes to their schoolwork. The children’s end of year results are available to view on School Pupil Tracker.

Y6 trip to Park Bridge.

Year 6 enjoyed a wonderful, if very cold day at Park Bridge on Wednesday. With the help of John the Park Ranger, the children learnt about the river features, rock formartions, erosion and the wildlife. They also drew pictures of the river and wrote poems about the river and the day. in the afternoon, they used nets to look at river water more closely and tested the speed of the water with the help of some oranges. The children were extremely well behaved and had a fantastic day, despite the cold and some rather wet feet by the end of it.

Numeracy Curriculum Workshop

Thank you to the parents who attended the Numeracy Workshop led by Mr Brown, our Maths Subject Leader. The workshop gave parents the opportunity to find out about some of the strategies we use in school to help support your child in the development of his or her maths skills.  Our Y6 children showcased some of the exciting resources we use in school to make mathematics fun.  Parents were also given a policy document which outlines how addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are now taught at St. Mary’s.

‘Personal Safety’ Awareness Raising Workshops

At St. Mary’s we are constantly trying to develop the children’s understanding of the importance of their own personal safety. ChildLine have visited school and introduced the Year 5 and 6 children to their new ‘Be Safe, Be Happy’ initiative which has a strong anti bullying / personal safety theme.

The children were complimented on their mature response to the themes covered by Mrs Tabner and their high level of engagement.
