EYFS Curriculum Progression

Welcome to EYFS! Here we are learning through play, building up all of the skills that we need to be successful lifelong learners.  Our day consists of a balance of child initiated play and adult led activities.  We focus on the main areas of :

  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Literacy
  • Maths
  • Understanding of the World
  • Creative Development

As a Catholic school RE is also one of our core areas of learning and the Catholic ethos runs through everything that we do in school.

Our Curriculum

Workshops to introduce our families to the EYFS curriculum at St Mary’s School take place during the Autumn term.  For those parents who have been unable to attend the workshops, you may access and download the relevant presentation and handouts through your child’s Tapestry account.

Here at St. Mary’s, we are in the process of developing our EYFS curriculum in line with the EYFS reforms.  We are using the Development Matters guidance in order to enhance our EYFS curriculum across F1 and F2, providing your children with an engaging, thematic, play-based curriculum approach.  We are developing a curriculum which provides balance across all curriculum areas, with a strong focus on communication and language, plus vocabulary development across all areas.

F1 – Nursery

F1 is an exciting and important year for your child as they will begin their school journey and make big footsteps in their learning and development. We encourage children to be inquisitive and independent, building firm foundations for learning in the prime areas: Communication & Language, Physical development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

Your child will grow and learn so much this year, through topics based around children’s interests and the world around them. There will be lots of smiles and laughter along the way too.

Information for F1 parents

We operate a school library to encourage life-long love of books and reading for your child.  Your child’s library book will be changed on a weekly basis.  We hope that you enjoy sharing these books with your child this year, along with anything else that they enjoy to read.  Reading is a wonderful way to develop your child’s language and literacy skills.   Picture books for reading with your child are changed on a weekly basis. Please use these to talk about stories, characters and events.

Your child’s learning journey will be available for you to view on the Tapestry website.  This will provide you with an insight into that activities that your child has been engaging in at school, ‘wow’ moments in their learning and sometimes also their next steps.  We hope that you find this useful.

Outdoor play is very important to us here in EYFS and is where lots of our learning takes place, so please ensure your child has a coat with a hood so that we are ready for all weathers!  Wellies are very welcome too.

Please ensure that all of your child’s uniform items are labelled, we are working with you to teach your child to be independent and take care of their belongings but name tags are essential.

Thank you for your support!

F2 – Reception

Your child will grow and learn so much this year, through topics based around children’s interests and the world around them.  We will have lots of fun together on our learning journey.

Phonics and Reading in F2

F2 is the exciting year when your child will learn to read!  We use a phonics first approach to reading – developing your child’s phonic knowledge will be one of the most vital skills that they will learn this year.  Children are taught phonics sessions on a daily basis: we use the First Class Phonics scheme of work for the teaching of phonics in both EYFS and Key Stage One.  We will keep you up to date with your child’s phonic progression through the Tapestry tool, suggesting games and activities to consolidate their learning at home.

Your child will be taught to read through guided reading sessions, where children share a book in small groups, practising the phonic skills that they have recently learned.  When ready, children will also take home a reading book to share at home.

Information for F2 parents

Reading books are changed on a weekly basis. Phonic word cards will be sent home at regular intervals, when appropriate.

We operate a school library to help to foster a life-long love of books and reading for your child.  Your child’s library book will be changed on a weekly basis.  We hope that you enjoy sharing these books with your child this year, along with anything else that they enjoy to read.  Reading makes such a big difference!  You cannot read enough to your child.

Occasionally, a home learning challenge (such as an Autumn walk or a shape hunt) or a talk homework (such as talking about the different people in their family) will be set. Completing these will help to prepare your child for their learning in school.  These will be communicated to you via our Tapestry online learning journey tool.

Your child’s learning journey will be available for you to view on the Tapestry website.  This will provide you with an insight into that activities that your child has been engaging in at school, any ‘wow’ moments in their learning and sometimes also their next steps.  We hope that you find this useful.

Please ensure that your child has their book bag and home reading book in school every day.  Please sign your child’s reading record on a weekly basis so that we can monitor home progress.

Outdoor play is very important to us here in EYFS and is where lots of our learning takes place, so please ensure your child has a coat with a hood so that we are ready for all weathers!  Wellies are very welcome too.

Please ensure that all of your child’s uniform items are labelled and that their PE kit is worn to school on a Friday, we are working with you to teach your child to be independent and take care of their belongings but name tags are essential.
